Dain
A former spy to Grym, this fighter is tough and has a personality to die from. Although he is still learning about the strange headaches and a shadow he keeps seeing, to him the world became gray when he found out everything he believed about Grym was wrong.
Family and Upbringing
Born into a humble family in the Empire of Korund, he grew up knowing hardship from an early age. His family possessed neither wealth nor influence, and every opportunity had to be earned through determination and relentless effort. Rather than allowing his circumstances to define him, he embraced discipline and hard work, believing that perseverance was the only path to a better future.
Seeking a life beyond the limitations of his upbringing, he enlisted in the army of Grym, where merit was valued above noble birth. Military life proved demanding, but it suited his character. Through rigorous training, unwavering dedication, and a willingness to endure hardship, he distinguished himself among his peers and earned his place within the infantry.
His first true test came during the war against Valor. Serving under the command of Captain Thorn, he fought alongside his fellow soldiers in the campaign to secure access to Valor's eastern border. The conflict exposed him to the brutal realities of war, teaching him that victory demanded sacrifice, discipline, and trust in those fighting beside him. Though the campaign left its mark on him, it also forged the resolve that continues to define him.
Cultural and Societal Influences
His experiences shaped a worldview built upon effort, responsibility, and the pursuit of worthy causes. He believes that no one is entitled to success and that lasting achievements are earned through perseverance and sacrifice.
Unlike many across the continent, he views Grym as a force for progress rather than conquest. In his eyes, the Empire strives to bring innovation, advancement, and opportunity to lands long held back by outdated traditions. While other empires cling to ancient customs and inherited privilege, he believes Grym offers ordinary people—people like his own family—the chance to build a better life through ability rather than birthright.
Although he understands that progress often comes at a cost, he remains convinced that stagnation is the greater danger. To him, embracing change is not simply a political ideal, but the only way to ensure that future generations will no longer have to endure the hardships that defined his own childhood.
Defining Life Events
The battle that changed his life was meant to be another step toward victory.
His unit, serving under Captain Thorn, had been ordered to seize a strategic checkpoint along Valor's eastern frontier. After hours of relentless fighting, the objective was finally within reach. The battlefield had become a sea of mud, blood, and fallen soldiers, and the surviving infantry pushed forward with what strength they had left.
Then he saw it.
A lone shadow moved silently across the battlefield, weaving effortlessly between the bodies of friend and foe alike. It did not run or hide; it simply walked, untouched by the chaos surrounding it. Drawn by instinct more than reason, he broke formation and pursued the mysterious figure.
He never caught it.
With every step, an overwhelming pain surged through his mind. A blinding headache unlike anything he had ever experienced brought him to his knees. Strange visions flooded his thoughts—fragmented images that made no sense, whispers he could not understand, and fleeting glimpses of places he had never seen. Unable to resist the agony, he collapsed into unconsciousness amid the fallen.
When he awoke the following morning, the battlefield was silent.
The checkpoint had been lost, the battle had ended in defeat, and the enemy had left him behind, believing him to be another corpse among the countless dead.
Lingering Effects
Upon returning to Grym's encampment, his account of the shadow and the terrifying visions was met with equal measures of concern and suspicion. Captain Thorn personally questioned him, determined to uncover every detail of what had happened on the battlefield. Yet no explanation could account for the debilitating headaches or the unsettling visions that continued to plague him.
Though his loyalty was never questioned, his fitness for military service was.
Declaring him mentally unstable for active combat, the army discharged him from the front lines. However, Grym was unwilling to discard a disciplined and capable soldier. Instead, he was reassigned to the Academy of Mornir, where his skills could still serve the Empire in a different capacity.
Officially, he was sent to continue his education and recover from his condition. Unofficially, he was expected to observe, gather information, and serve as Grym's eyes within the Academy should the need arise. Whether acting as a spy, an agent, or simply a soldier awaiting a new purpose, his loyalty to the Empire remained unchanged.
Yet the headaches never truly faded. The visions continued to return without warning, often accompanied by the same overwhelming sensation he had felt on that battlefield. Deep within him lingers the unsettling certainty that the shadow he pursued was no ordinary enemy—and that one day, their paths will cross again.
Beliefs and Philosophy
Core Beliefs
He firmly believes that the future of the continent lies in progress. To him, scientific discovery and magical innovation are the greatest tools civilization possesses to overcome suffering, conflict, and scarcity. Advancement should never be feared simply because it challenges tradition; it should be embraced as the means to create a safer and more prosperous world.
For much of his life, he believed that the Empire of Grym embodied these ideals better than any other nation. It rewarded merit over birth, encouraged innovation, and sought to reshape the continent through progress rather than preserving outdated customs. It was this belief that inspired him to dedicate his life to military service.
However, recent events have begun to shake those convictions. The more he has witnessed—and the more secrets he has uncovered—the more he questions whether Grym's pursuit of progress truly serves the people or merely those in power. He has not abandoned his belief in innovation, but he has begun to doubt the hands guiding it.
View of the World
He has always viewed the continent through the lens of opportunity and wasted potential.
In his eyes, Valor possesses some of the richest deposits of ore, iron, and other precious metals in the known world—resources capable of fueling an unprecedented age of technological and magical advancement. Yet Valor's rigid traditionalism and refusal to cooperate with Grym have, in his opinion, prevented both nations from achieving far greater prosperity.
Over time, however, his perspective has grown more nuanced. While he still believes that progress is essential, he has come to realize that every nation justifies its actions through its own ideals. His experiences have taught him that neither innovation nor tradition is inherently virtuous; both can become dangerous when used to pursue power at any cost.
Faith or Spirituality
He places no faith in gods or divine intervention.
To him, the universe is governed by cause and effect rather than destiny. If answers exist, they are to be discovered through observation, reason, and perseverance—not through prayer. His recent encounters with inexplicable powers have challenged many of his assumptions, yet they have only strengthened his desire to understand the unknown rather than worship it.
Motivations and Goals
The man who left Grym's army is no longer the same soldier who once believed unquestioningly in the Empire's ideals.
The strange visions, the mysterious shadow on the battlefield, and the powers that awakened within him have forced him to confront a reality far more complicated than he ever imagined. More than anything, he seeks answers. He wants to understand the true nature of the forces that now haunt him, uncover the origin of his newfound abilities, and learn why he was chosen—or cursed—to experience them.
At the same time, his faith in Grym has crumbled. What began as loyalty has transformed into suspicion, and suspicion into anger. He is determined to uncover the truth behind the Empire's actions, exposing the motives hidden beneath its promises of progress. If those responsible have betrayed the ideals they once claimed to uphold, he intends to hold them accountable.
His growing resentment has evolved into a desire for vengeance—not against the people of Grym, but against the system and those who corrupted it. He dreams of bringing an end to the Empire as it exists today and replacing it with something worthy of its original promise: a New Grym, built upon justice, transparency, and genuine progress rather than manipulation and conquest.
To achieve a goal of such magnitude, he knows he cannot stand alone. Inspired by the heroes and legends of old, he hopes to gather an extraordinary band of individuals, each possessing unique talents and unwavering conviction. Together, they would become a force capable of confronting threats no single hero could face and reshaping the future of the continent.
